Totally agree with your post! Do we have to get caught up in semantics? Don't we want to just do what's effective for helping people raise the quality of their lives? If labeling something an "addiciton" is effective for improved lives, then what's the harm? I guess that's my question: what is the harm?

I think that society tends to forget that there are different types of addictions psychological versus physiological are very different "beasts" with different antecedents, treatments and prognoses.

I agree that we as a society are often too quick to label something as an addiction and pathologize it, but regardless if it is a true physiological addiction, a psychological dependence, or a behavioral obsession, if it interferes with normal functioning, doesn't it deserve treatment? I agree with your assertion that labeling something gives it a different level of legitimacy, its too bad that people need that in order to get help, but I suppose that's a bigger issue.
